The Pre-Cantabrian section explain important events prior to the Cantabrian Expeditions that have some bearing on events happening in the series. We deal with these subjects first by character, then by race. There may be SPOILERS below!
Please choose from the following characters:
Noel encountered the Wthaure in 2369. The situation between the Wthaure and Federation are strained at the time. When the Cantabrian and a Wthaure battle cruiser faced off, Noel tried to talk the Wthaure down -- the Wthaure blamed Starfleet for the orbital attacks of several Wthaure colonies -- but a subspace explosion of unknown origin detonates between the two ships, crippling the Wthaure battle cruiser and severely damaging the Cantabrian. This event led to the Cantabrian's refit and even more strained relations between the Federation and the Wthaure. Noel also underwent a court martial, but no wrongdoing was ever found on his part.
Aboard the Christchurch, Noel Turner served as then-Captain Zahara Hogan's first officer. He also served with D'Angelo and others he would promote to senior officers aboard the Cantabrian.
Liz's first love was Ethan Arden, whom she met at Starfleet Academy when they were both cadets. They had a very passionate, very vibrant relationship, but this died when Ethan graduated and shipped out. Liz, in turn, met and eventually married Velutha Singh.
Liz and Velutha had twins, and as the twins grew up, she rose through the ranks. As the first officer of the Starship Rebellious, she faced her worst fears in 2366 when the Rebellious participated in the Starfleet task force attempting to stop the Borg cube at Wolf 359. In the panic that ensued after the Rebellious's immobilization, Liz found her husband Velutha dead and Borg drones leading her assimilated children away.
Tony Ramirez was born to prominent Federation scientists conducting warp theory experiments aboard the Starship Auckland. Their reputation led to their overconfidence; this overconfidence led to the miscalculation leading to the destruction of their co-axial warp drive and the Auckland: an event scarring Tony for life and ensuring he took a more conservative approach to science.
Tony also survived the Garon event aboard the Wellington. With all the officers above him either dead or incapacitated, Ramirez reluctantly took command of the Wellington to steer her away from trouble. In a personal tragedy, he fought to keep his composure in questioning Ro Laren after his partner died as a result of her foolish actions.
Scott, like Noel, was a victim of a chemical attack during the Eugenics War, resulting in him and many other victims being stored aboard "sleeper ships" launched in orbit around Earth. In 1996, when the Starship Voyager visited Earth, their departure inadvertently spread these sleeper ships throughout time and space.
Sometime between 1996 and 2353, the M'Tar intercept the sleeper ship and perform experiments on the bodies stored within. The only successful experiment was Scott, with modifications to many of his body's systems. The purpose of these modifications remained unclear for many years until the first of many adversarial encounters with the M'Tar.
Scott met Liam Thomas at Starfleet Academy where they began an on-again, off-again relationship. This relationship lasted approximately three years until Liam graduated and left the Academy for his first assignment. He promised to keep in touch; he never did.
With his various M'Tar-enhanced senses, Scott joined Starfleet Special Operations at their request. During this time, he and his crewmates felt the M'Tar wrath when they sabotaged and nearly destroyed the Artemis, killing nearly 80% of the crew.
The Saratoga rescued the survivors, and one rescuer in particular took special interest in Scott. As a result, Scott started a long-term relationship with Jason, lasting nearly seven years.
Years later, the survivors, now aboard the Prospect, discovered the hulk of the Artemis. The M'Tar grand plan seemed to grow into focus when two M'Tar survivors hijacked Scott's body. Only by the Prospect crew's interference could Scott be retrieved, and they destroyed the Artemis and what they believed the remainder of the M'Tar race.
Scott gained valuable command experience aboard the Starships Minnesota and Vicksburg, and, for a while, he considered transferring to command, but a nearly tragic event led him to think otherwise.
Yh'ahni's race isn't known; her adopted family encountered a ship of an unknown race who attempted to commandeer their Federation ship, killing everyone aboard (except Mr. and Dr. Nguyen). Somehow, the Nguyens escaped with an orphan and struggled on a six-year journey back to the Federation.
The only daughter of a Trill government official and a half-Betazoid, half-Bolian Starfleet officer, Tawana discovered racism existed in the Federation early on in her life. Never quite fitting in in any society (other than aboard her mother's starship), she grew very introverted. This introversion, however, pushed her to study hard, leading to her amazing skills at the flight control station.
As a flight controller aboard the Starship Palmerston North, Tawana's advanced flight controller skills saved some crew against a Cardassian Dreadnought; any other less-experienced officer at the helm would have seen the ship destroyed.
Marie's daughter, Helena, was kicked off the Coral Sea for smuggling illegal drugs aboard. Because Marie supported her captain's actions, she and Helena's relationship has been strained to the point where neither party is talking to the other. Helena does, however, keep in contact with her father.
Marie and her husband divorced soon after Marie's first Starfleet assignment, and Marie reverted back to her maiden name and changed Helena's to reflect this as well.
See "Elizabeth Singh" for more information on their relationship.
His family have been Starfleet engineers as long as he could remember. Oddly enough, neither of his parents were space-based engineers, his father opting instead to work at a Starfleet Corps of Engineers station in Melbourne, Australia, whilst his mother worked as a private contractor for a firm in the same city.
When he was young, his grandmother, a Starfleet engineer herself, left on a mission but never returned; her ship was missing, presumed lost. Her disappearance helped fuel Ethan's desire to explore space, secretly hoping to find her again.
Dakota's mother was the commanding officer of the Starship Cartwright. Whilst living on board with his mother, an away team found an ancient artefact. This artefact "triggered" when Dakota touched it, knocking him into a coma whilst altering his DNA slightly. Since this event, Dakota has held a strong ability for understanding and translating even the most alien of languages.
Both his parents were also exposed to this artefact, and this exposure could explain the strange illness that led to Dakota's father's death. Dakota's mother and the crew of the Cartwright went missing, presumed lost, during the Federation-Tzenkethi War, shortly before Dakota's father's death.
Dakota felt he didn't belong with a crew on a starship, and this is why he took up the assignment to act as a Federation Liaison with the Lelari when their homeworld was discovered by the Starship Galaxy.
